College of Aviation & Management
The Department of Aviation Management was founded in 1988, and continued to develop until it was renamed as the Department of Air Transportation in 1995. The change of name was accompanied by the reorganization of its curriculum and the addition of subjects pertaining to general transportation services.
Thereafter, the department was further developed into a school offering two major courses on air transportation and transportation and logistics in March 2001. Subjects covering transportation logistics were added to the curriculum while the general transportation service courses were further systematized through continuous curriculum research. In 2002 the school was selected as one of the outstanding education reform universities (for recognition of its deployment of a total management system for air transportation specialists). It was again selected by the Ministry of Information and Communication as a non-IT support school in 2003. It was also awarded a special government grant worth 1.4 billion won after its selection by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources as one of country’s most prestigious specialized schools (for recognition of its deployment of an air transport, transportation and logistics integrated education system designed to help Korea develop into a Northeast Asian logistics hub). With the award of this grant, the school was able to procure an array of lab equipment and software to help the students to gain a better understanding of their major course subjects through abundant hands-on training.
Furthermore, the school operates diverse lab facilities for radar control, airport control, logistics information, SCM/ERP, transportation system planning and operation, and RFID systems and services. The school has its own computing lab equipped with 6 large-capacity servers, and 70 of the latest PCs and LCD monitors with which the students can freely practice and research various programs. Students can also efficiently carry out team projects at the lab. In 2004, the school was further expanded to run three major courses on air transport, transportation systems, and logistics management.
This school is designed to foster the quality human resources required to operate air transport, logistics and transportation systems by teaching the latest theories and application methods relating to the operation and management of the transport and logistics industries, including air transport services, based on transportation science. To that end, it provides not only major subjects but also extensive multiple major or minor subjects. The school also focuses on developing the students’ foreign language proficiency and the IT skills required for members of the global information community. During vacation periods, the school attempts to enhance the students’ ability to apply their knowledge to practical work through on-the-job training in air traffic control, operation management, logistics services, transportation system planning and design, etc. The school has become one of the most competitive at KAU and has attracted top level candidates through admission exams, as it boasts unique merits and highly effective specialized models that are based on the rapidly changing demand in the transportation and logistics industries.
Air Transportation Major
The Air Transport Major Course is Korea’s only university program designed to foster experts in designing, managing or operating air space and air transport management systems, providing the foundations for civilian and military air transport services at home and abroad. This course also fosters civilian air traffic controllers according to ICAO standards through its Air Traffic Control Training Institute, a specialized training agency designated by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation.
The Air Transport Major Course is designed to foster high level talent in the field of air transport by providing a comprehensive program integrating both the theoretical and practical education of the expert knowledge and skills required for air traffic control and air transport services.
To that end, it teaches curricular subjects that build expertise in such fields of air transport service as air traffic control, flight operation management, and airline and airport control and management. Students may obtain the government license for air traffic controllers and flight operation managers even before graduation by taking additional courses offered by the Air Traffic Control Institute. Graduates may advance into the Ministry of Construction and Transportation, airlines, airport maintenance services, air transport businesses, and transportation research institutes.
Korea is striving to develop its air transport related industries and ultimately the national economy by developing physical distribution industries to a world-class standard on the strength of such infrastructure as Incheon International Airport. Therefore, we need many quality specialists in the fields of physical distribution or logistics. Accordingly, the Traffic Management Course fosters highly qualified traffic management personnel who can satisfy the need of the related industries for modernization while attaining the national goal of developing Korea into a Northeast Asian logistic service hub.
This course teaches major subjects on traffic and transportation centered physical distribution, including physical distribution planning, system design and operation, traffic management and information, all of which are necessary skills for traffic management specialists. It fosters personnel equipped with both the expert knowledge and practical competence required to operate advanced physical distribution systems through field practice courses.
The students may obtain a traffic management specialist’s or engineer’s certificate by taking multiple or minor subjects while attending this course. The graduates work for airlines, transportation, physical distribution service providers, the traffic management departments of manufacturing or service companies, or consulting firms.
Air and Space Law Major
The Department of Air and Space Law is designed to foster the highly competent specialists required in the 21st aerospace age by teaching aerospace law and policy-related subjects in addition to the curriculum of the general undergraduate law courses.
This department enables students to prepare for various qualification examinations by offering basic courses on civil, criminal, constitution, commercial and international law.
Furthermore, students may develop expert knowledge on aerospace law by studying various major subject areas such as aviation, space law and aerospace policy. In particular, the department teaches all aviation-related subjects such as flight operation, transportation, management and engineering so that students may acquire extensive expert theories and knowledge.
In addition, the department enables its students to become experts in aerospace law and leaders of the aerospace industry. They find employment in government offices, airlines, international organizations and business companies upon graduation.
To foster superior pilots and flight operators, the Department of Aviation Operation teaches the theories related to aviation operation, including aviation engineering, air safety, flight information and procedures, air transport services, instrument flight, and navigation. In particular, students are trained to obtain a private or commercial aircraft pilot license or instrument flight certificate, which are essential for those wishing to become a commercial pilot, by taking pilot skills and various field practice courses.
This department, which is regarded as Korea’s best in the field of aviation operation education, is striving to become one of the world’s best.
